Kenyan-born Sarah Onyango has become a well-known fixture on
Ottawa’s community television and radio scene. She is often to be
spotted at community events, camera and tape recorder in hand,
looking for uplifting stories about the National Capital region’s growing
African and Caribbean community. Besides being an occasional
contributor to the weekly CFMT program Planet Africa Television,
Sarah hosts the monthly African cultural program Fontonfrom,
on Rogers Cable 22 - Ottawa.
Her interest in exploring issues affecting Canada’s Black community led
her to produce two one-hour nationally- broadcast television programs
for the Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC): “Lest We Forget, Blacks
Served Too” and “Future of Canada’s Communities of African Descent”.
Since 1998, she has produced and hosted segments for “Black on
Black”, a weekly public affairs program aired on CHUO 89.1FM (University of Ottawa
community radio). In 2002, she took on hosting and producing duties for
the popular weekly African radio program Afrika Revisited, which has been
airing on CHUO since the early 1990s.
Ms. Onyango’s media expertise extends beyond the airwaves to print. She has written articles for two Black monthly community newspapers in Ottawa, namely the now-defunct The Drum, published by Harambee Centres (National Capital Region) in the mid-1990s, and The Spectrum, established by in 1984.
A tireless promoter of African and Caribbean culture
and activities, Sarah has for many years been actively involved in public relations work for various Black community organizations such as Black History Ottawa, Fête Caribe, the Association of Kenyans in Canada and the Nigerian Association in Ottawa.
